Want More Shifts? Start With These 4 App Tips

May 28, 2026

Maximising your shift opportunities is all about being ready when the right ones come up. When things move quickly, it helps to stay one step ahead. The good news is that the app has some handy features designed to help you stay visible, stay flexible, and get quicker access to the shifts that suit you best.

Here are four simple but powerful things you can do right now to maximise your shifts with us.

Tip 1: Keep Your Availability Up to Date

This one sounds simple, but it makes a big difference than you might think. When your availability is accurate, we can match you with the right shifts at the right time and you're far more likely to be considered for opportunities that genuinely work for you.

Tick green where you're available, mark red where you're not, and make sure you're not leaving any blank spaces. Blanks can mean missed opportunities, so keeping this up to date is one of the best habits you can build.

App location: Shifts tab > My Availability / Permanent Availability / Bulk Availability

Tip 2: Use "Allocate Me Now" to Find Matching Shifts

If you want the app to do some of the heavy lifting for you, this is the feature to use. “Allocate Me Now” automatically surfaces shifts that are the best match for you, so instead of scrolling through everything, you're seeing the opportunities most relevant to your experience and availability.

To access it, head to the Shifts tab and select “Allocate Me Now”. In just a few seconds, a list of available shifts will appear. It's a simple step that can make a real difference to the quality and quantity of shifts you're picking up.

App location: Shifts tab > Allocate Me Now

Tip 3: Check the "Advised Unable to Fill" Section

This is one that not everyone knows about and it's worth checking regularly. The “Advised Unable to Fill” section displays shifts within the next seven days that have been returned to the facility because they cannot be filled at this stage and may not currently be required.

You can select any shifts that suit your availability and register your interest. If a shift is reactivated with client approval, you will be notified and may then be assigned to it.

Keep in mind that some of these shifts may be reactivated and will still require client confirmation. Getting in early and registering your interest can improve your chances when shifts become available again.

App location: Shifts tab > Advised Unable to Fill

Tip 4: Turn Your Notifications On

This one is essential. When a shift becomes available, it moves fast and having your notifications on means you'll see it the moment it's sent to you. You stay in control, choosing to accept or decline based on what works for you, but you won't miss the opportunity in the first place.

Head to the Preferences tab, select Subscriptions, and make sure your notifications are enabled. It's a small change that can have a real impact on the shifts you're securing.

App location: Preferences tab > Subscriptions

Final Thoughts

Maximising your shifts comes down to staying proactive and making the most of the tools available to you. When your availability is current and your notifications are on, you're giving yourself the best possible chance of securing shifts that genuinely suit you.

We're here to support you every step of the way and these features are designed to make that easier. If you have any questions about using the app, don't hesitate to reach out to the team.

What Flexible Nursing Means: Casual and Agency Nursing Explained Flexible work in nursing typically includes casual and agency roles, both of which give nurses greater control over their schedules. Casual nursing allows nurses to pick up shifts around personal commitments such as family life, study or travel. Agency nursing offers short-term and contract roles across a variety of healthcare settings, providing even greater flexibility and exposure to different clinical environments. There are common misconceptions about flexible nursing. Some believe these roles lack stability or consistency, while others assume they limit career progression. In reality, many nurses use flexible work to build schedules that suit their lifestyle. Working across multiple healthcare settings can also strengthen clinical capability, broaden experience and enhance employability. Benefits of Flexible Nursing for Work-Life Balance One of the key advantages of flexible nursing is improved work-life balance. Nurses can choose shifts that align with their personal priorities, whether that includes family commitments, study, travel or increased rest time. In addition, exposure to different healthcare environments helps build diverse clinical experience, expand skill sets and strengthen professional confidence. Moving Between Clinical Agency and Facilitation Roles in Nursing Flexible nursing can also support meaningful career progression over time. Many nurses begin in clinical agency roles to gain experience across a range of healthcare settings and build confidence in varied environments. From there, some progress into more specialised positions, including clinical nurse facilitation, where they support, mentor and guide other nurses in practice. Through First Choice Care, nurses can access opportunities across both metro agency roles and clinical nurse facilitation pathways, with the ability to move between them depending on experience, demand and goals. Challenges of Flexible Nursing (and How to Manage Them) While flexible nursing offers significant benefits, it also comes with considerations. Shift availability can vary, so planning ahead is important to maintain consistency in both income and scheduling. Working across different healthcare settings also requires adaptability, as nurses may need to quickly adjust to new teams, systems and processes. With the right planning and support, these challenges can be effectively managed, allowing nurses to fully benefit from the flexibility this career path offers. How to Take Control of Your Nursing Schedule Taking control of your schedule starts with understanding your priorities and setting clear boundaries around work. This includes identifying non-negotiables such as preferred days off, income goals and the types of shifts or locations that best suit your lifestyle. Casual and agency work allows nurses to build a schedule based on choice rather than fixed rostering. Over time, this approach supports a more balanced and intentional way of working, giving nurses greater ownership of both their time. The Future of Flexible Nursing in Australia The future of nursing is increasingly centred around flexibility, driven by ongoing workforce shortages and a stronger focus on wellbeing, retention and sustainability. Healthcare systems are evolving towards more adaptable workforce models, supported by digital rostering and shift management technology. These developments make it easier for nurses to choose when and where they work while still meeting service needs. As this continues to grow, flexible nursing is expected to become a core component of the healthcare workforce, offering greater autonomy, improved job satisfaction and long-term career sustainability.
