Nurses of the Month - September 2025

September 30, 2025

We're celebrating outstanding First Choice Care nurses who go above and beyond. Recognised for their dedication, compassion, and heart for care, our Nurses of the Month inspire us all.

Hear from them below and join us in congratulating them on receiving a $100 gift card.

Ali W - New South Wales

Ali finds joy and purpose in every shift she takes with First Choice Care.

What she loves most about working here is the consistency and the support she receives from the team. “I like the consistency and that there’s always someone there to help. Everyone is very friendly,” she says.

For Ali, it’s the daily care she provides that truly makes her work rewarding.

“Overall, I love caring for women and babies,” she shares, reflecting on the moments that make her role so meaningful.

Her approach to nursing is guided by a simple but powerful principle: “Never doubt your clinical judgement and always trust your gut.”

Ali is also quick to recommend First Choice Care to other nurses, citing the incredible support and flexibility she experiences: “Yes, 100%. The support I’ve been given has been fantastic, and they always try their best to get me as many shifts as I like.”

We’re proud to celebrate Ali and the dedication, care, and positivity she brings to every shift.

Aylmer U - Victoria

Some people talk about work-life balance, Aylmer truly lives it.

As our Victorian Nurse of the Month, he shines a light on what he values most about working with First Choice Care:

“I really enjoy the flexibility. It allows me to balance work with my personal life, and I think that’s one of the most attractive parts of working with First Choice Care.”

That flexibility means Aylmer can show up to every shift with energy, focus and heart.

For him, it’s not only about the big milestones it’s the little everyday moments that count. “Honestly, I feel that every moment has been a highlight. I’m very grateful because you always provide me with shifts, and that support has made my time here really positive.”

His perspective is guided by a simple yet powerful piece of advice:

“Never be afraid to grab a new opportunity. Every experience helps you grow, both in terms of skills and financially.”

It’s this openness that has helped him build his nursing career with confidence and enthusiasm.

Would he recommend First Choice Care to other nurses? Absolutely: “Because of the flexibility, the opportunities for growth, and the consistent support you provide. It’s a great way to develop professionally while also having control over your work-life balance.”

Aylmer, thank you for bringing your positivity, professionalism and care to every shift. We’re so proud to celebrate you as our Victorian Nurse of the Month.

Jenice H - Queensland

For Jenice, working with First Choice Care is all about freedom and flexibility. She loves having the choice over when and where she works, and the intuitive app makes it easy to accept or decline shifts at her convenience.

“It gives me the freedom of choice, whether I want to work or not, where I work, and when. The app is great — the shifts are served up to accept or decline. What could be better?”

Every shift brings its own moments, and she treasures the highlights, big and small. One night working in Children’s Mental Health stands out vividly: “There are some challenges. I was with a particularly challenging patient, but when it was time to go and I let them know, they ran up and hugged me. It can be challenging, but you take the rewards, highlight the good, and laugh.”

Her approach to nursing is guided by wisdom and balance: “Put your heart into it but don’t forget about yourself and your own needs — be kind, compassionate, and don’t be too tough on yourself. Don’t take things personally. Always look at the bigger picture. Make good assessments before you jump in and take action. My advice for others is to look up to the old girls — listen to them, they’ve been there and done it.”

When it comes to recommending First Choice Care, Jenice has no hesitation:

“I do all the time! I worked at a Private Hospital in Brisbane for 25 years, and First Choice Care was my best agency — always going above and beyond to find staff. When I moved to agency work, First Choice was my first choice. Now I get looked after and sent where I’m happiest; the allocations team know me well.”

We’re proud to celebrate Jenice for her dedication, compassion, and the joy she brings to every shift.

What Flexible Nursing Means: Casual and Agency Nursing Explained Flexible work in nursing typically includes casual and agency roles, both of which give nurses greater control over their schedules. Casual nursing allows nurses to pick up shifts around personal commitments such as family life, study or travel. Agency nursing offers short-term and contract roles across a variety of healthcare settings, providing even greater flexibility and exposure to different clinical environments. There are common misconceptions about flexible nursing. Some believe these roles lack stability or consistency, while others assume they limit career progression. In reality, many nurses use flexible work to build schedules that suit their lifestyle. Working across multiple healthcare settings can also strengthen clinical capability, broaden experience and enhance employability. Benefits of Flexible Nursing for Work-Life Balance One of the key advantages of flexible nursing is improved work-life balance. Nurses can choose shifts that align with their personal priorities, whether that includes family commitments, study, travel or increased rest time. In addition, exposure to different healthcare environments helps build diverse clinical experience, expand skill sets and strengthen professional confidence. Moving Between Clinical Agency and Facilitation Roles in Nursing Flexible nursing can also support meaningful career progression over time. Many nurses begin in clinical agency roles to gain experience across a range of healthcare settings and build confidence in varied environments. From there, some progress into more specialised positions, including clinical nurse facilitation, where they support, mentor and guide other nurses in practice. Through First Choice Care, nurses can access opportunities across both metro agency roles and clinical nurse facilitation pathways, with the ability to move between them depending on experience, demand and goals. Challenges of Flexible Nursing (and How to Manage Them) While flexible nursing offers significant benefits, it also comes with considerations. Shift availability can vary, so planning ahead is important to maintain consistency in both income and scheduling. Working across different healthcare settings also requires adaptability, as nurses may need to quickly adjust to new teams, systems and processes. With the right planning and support, these challenges can be effectively managed, allowing nurses to fully benefit from the flexibility this career path offers. How to Take Control of Your Nursing Schedule Taking control of your schedule starts with understanding your priorities and setting clear boundaries around work. This includes identifying non-negotiables such as preferred days off, income goals and the types of shifts or locations that best suit your lifestyle. Casual and agency work allows nurses to build a schedule based on choice rather than fixed rostering. Over time, this approach supports a more balanced and intentional way of working, giving nurses greater ownership of both their time. The Future of Flexible Nursing in Australia The future of nursing is increasingly centred around flexibility, driven by ongoing workforce shortages and a stronger focus on wellbeing, retention and sustainability. Healthcare systems are evolving towards more adaptable workforce models, supported by digital rostering and shift management technology. These developments make it easier for nurses to choose when and where they work while still meeting service needs. As this continues to grow, flexible nursing is expected to become a core component of the healthcare workforce, offering greater autonomy, improved job satisfaction and long-term career sustainability.
